Tamworth 11th July 2015

Report by Ian Richards   -

Tom Bosworth fresh from his British Record over 5,000 metres at Birmingham the previous weekend, led the South of England to a victory over the North and Midlands at the Tamworth Athletics Stadium reports Ian Richards. Bosworth used the 10,000 metres as a tempo training session as he cruised to victory in 42:02.0. Bosworth who has secured automatic selection for Beijing, was making a rare appearance over 10,000 metres on the track and despite cruising around his time represented a personal best. Immediately after crossing the line, Bosworth moved onto complete his days training session with a 5 by 1 Kilometre reps session. Bosworth said “Last week’s British Record of 19:00.75 was hard work, but I really enjoyed today and it is great to be part of the South of England Team and to hopefully inspire some of the youngsters competing today”.

Behind Bosworth Cameron Corbishley made it a Southern double by taking the Junior 10,000 metres with a mature performance in 43:58.1, only 28 seconds slower than he walked in the Under 20 Championships in Bedford last month. Tim Snook clocked a track personal best of 50:50.2 to secure maximum points for the South. Second place in the men’s race went to Francisco Reis of the south who had won the RWA 10km on the road the previous weekend at Hillingdon ahead of the Midlands Mark Williams. The South’s domination continued in the Under 17 Men’s 5000 metres, in which Chris Snook dominated the race from gun to tape, in clocking 24.50.1.

In the Senior Women’s 5000 metres, Gemma Bridge, who was making a welcome return to top level race walking competition, produced a very encouraging performance of 25:08.0 in taking victory, which would have been good enough to have placed her in 5th in last weekend’s British Championship. Second behind Bridge was the North’s Brenda Gannon who matched her performance from the British Championships the previous weekend in clocking 25:46.4. Kate Donaldson was 3rd for the Midlands in a new personal best of 27:30.1. In the Under 20 Women’s 5000 metres, was won by the South’s Heather Butcher in 27:03.4, whilst compatriot Sophie Lewis Ward took the Under 17 Women’s 5000 metres in 25:38.0 ahead of the North’s National under 15 Champion Ana Garcia (26:27.4).

The early stages of the under 15 3000m The Under 15 Girls 3,000 metres was an excellent battle with the South’s Evie Butcher, the Midland’s Karla Lane and North’s Pagen Spooner setting the pace over the first couple of laps. Butcher and Lane moved away after the 800 metres point and Butcher pulled away from Lane over the last half of the race, to come home in a season best of 15:48.1 to move to top of the UK under 15 rankings. Lane slowed over the last few laps as Spooner closed the gap, as both clocked personal bests of 16:13.8 and 16:21.0 respectively. The under 15 Boys 3000 metres was won by the North’s Steven Waddington in 18:04.7. The Under 13 Girls 2000 metres was won by National Champion Suki Ly for the South in 11:01.1 ahead of the North’s Molly Meleady-Hanley in 12:17.4. The Under 13 Boys provided the host Area’s only victory of the day as Faris Alkhamesi took the race in 11:07.9 ahead of Northern duo Kai Cundey and Archie Walter.

This resulted in the South taking the Inter-Area Trophy with 71 points, ahead of the North (46) and Midlands (35).

Besides the Welsh guests, Bill McFadden was the sole representative of Scottish Athletics.
