This site represents Race Walking in the North of England

It is administered by members of Yorkshire RWC to promote and serve this great discipline, both throughout the Region and Nationally.  Race Walking has a long, rich, varied and fascinating history within ATHLETICS  and remains an essential branch of the sport besides Running, Throwing and Jumping.

OLYMPIC events have taken place since the early 1900's and are raced on the road at distances of 20km for Men + Women, and at 50km for Men only. These are supported by World, Continental, Area and National Championships all over the planet, and for all age groups from Under 13's to the fastest of octogenarians.

The basic rule for competition is that One Foot Must be On the Ground at all Times, with a secondary requirement for the leading leg be straightened as it makes contact with the ground in front of the body. These are based on the most elemental of human skills, learnt by most of us within our first year, yet taken to extraordinary levels of athletic achievement by the best who can compete, under the strict watch of qualified judges, at speeds beyond 10 miles per hour.

Walking at your fastest pace over distance, and regularly done,  will always be the most beneficial of activities for young and old alike, a fact consistently supported by medical opinion and studies.

Here we cover the spectrum from power walking for fitness in our  local communities, all the way to Nationally competitive and International Racing for the more serious athlete. If you're still at school or maybe a GB representative based at our High Performance Centre in Leeds, a seasoned Masters walker with decades of service to the sport or a newcomer of any age looking for a suitable level of enjoyable competition ,  whether you want to be fast at 3,000m or succeed at 100 Miles . . . . . .   whether your preference is A or B Category racing, or both, and whether you are a student of the sport's history or an afficionado of what it might possibly become   -    we firmly believe that, if all are united from the rank-and-file to the elite, anything is possible for any of us to achieve.

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. It requires the bare minimum of equipment. It is underrated as a form of exercise and ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels who want to be more active. Regular walking has been shown to help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers. For any persons interested in a fulfilling experience we heartily recommend a peek at our Soup & Roll League programme of events which caters for all abilities at some wonderful locations across the scenic Pennines. And there are many other suitable races too . . .
